May Book Group Read – “Sugar Birds”

Please join us on May 20 at 5:30 in the Parish House for our next Book Club and Potluck when we will be discussing Sugar Birds, by Cheryl Grey Bostrom. Bring a dish to share and the beverage of your choice.

NORTHWEST WASHINGTON STATE, 1985

For years, Harris Hayes has taught his daughter, Aggie, the ways of the northern woods, where she sketches nests of wild birds as an antidote to sadness. Then her depressed, unpredictable mother forbids her to climb the trees that give her sanctuary and comfort. Angry, ten-year-old Aggie accidentally lights a tragic fire and flees downriver. She lands her boat near untamed forest, then hides among trees and creatures she believes are her only friends—determined to remain undiscovered.

A search party gathers hours after Celia arrives at her grandmother’s nearby farm. Hurting from her parents’ breakup, she also plans to run. But when she joins the hunt for Aggie, she meets two irresistible young men who compel her to stay. One is autistic; the other, dangerous.

Ideal for fans of Under the Magnolias, Where the Crawdads Sing, and The Great Alone, Sugar Birds is a layered, riveting story set in the breathtaking natural world—where characters encounter the mending power of forgiveness, for themselves and for those who have failed them.

All are welcome. Please contact Gail Harling, gailharling@gmail.com with any questions.

Bible Study

All are welcome to attend Thursday morning Bible Study, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., in the Parish House.  The Book of Jonah was chosen as the place to begin exploring the major movements in the Old Testament. This helps to contextualize the ministry of Jesus more easily. No prior experience in a Bible study is necessary.

Upcoming CYFM (Children, Youth, & Family Ministry) Events

Seeking Sunday School Assistants

Our Sunday School program needs new volunteers who are interested in contributing their time and talents. We currently are looking for three Godly Play doorkeepers and 2-4 Youth Sunday School teachers. Sunday School meets from 10:00-10:35 am in the Parish House during worship, and volunteers typically assist once/month with minimal outside preparation. The Godly Play program serves children age 4-5th grade, and the youth program includes teens in 6th-12th grade. Please contact Beth (beth@asbts.org, (805) 280-5194) for more information if you’re interested in supporting the growth and formation of our children and youth.

Sack Lunch Preparation for Transition House

Sunday, January 14th at 9:00 am

All Saints is expanding their longstanding ministry to Transition House by providing monthly Monday packed lunches. Houghton Hyatt will be leading volunteers in preparing these lunches and serve as the coordinator for this opportunity. Lunches will be prepared here on All Saints campus (in the Parish Hall) between Sunday morning services and delivered to Transition House later by a volunteer. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to help prepare lunch for Transition House families. Please contact Houghton (houghtonhyatt@houghtonhyatt.com) if you, your family, or your children would like to volunteer this month. Because this is becoming a popular ministry and space is limited, signups are needed to participate.

Youth Group Lunch and Movie Afternoon

Sunday, January 21st, 11:30 am-2:30 pm

All youth (6th-12th grade) are welcome to join us for our first Youth Group of the year on January 21st. We will be eating spaghetti, salad, and dessert and watching Leo (2023). Common Sense Media describes Leo as “a tender animated musical starring Adam Sandler and Bill Burr as veteran classroom pets. Both the kids in the movie and those watching at home learn important lessons about empathy and self-forgiveness from wise lizard Leo and his ability to lend a supportive ear.” Youth will meet in the Parish House to eat and watch the movie on the big screen as we discuss community and the value of kindness and understanding in the teenage years. Parents can read Common Sense Media’s full movie review at https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/leo.
